Why I’m Preparing for CAT 2026 (And What I’ve Learned So Far)

When I first heard about the CAT, I didn’t fully grasp what I was signing up for. I knew it was important. I knew it was tough. And I definitely knew it wasn’t something you casually attempt. But only after diving in did I realize what preparing for the CAT actually demands—not just academically, but mentally, emotionally, and even in terms of discipline.

In this blog post, I want to share why I chose to start this journey, what I’ve learned so far, and what the CAT is slowly teaching me beyond formulas and reading comprehension.

What is CAT and Why It Matters

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is the gateway to India’s top management institutes like the IIMs. But beyond the exam and percentile chase, it’s a challenge—one that tests your ability to think under pressure, stay consistent, and learn smart.

People don’t just prepare for the CAT to get into a B-school. They prepare to become sharper thinkers, better decision-makers, and ultimately, future leaders.

That’s why I chose the CAT—not just for where it could take me, but for what it could make of me along the way.

My Reasons for Preparing for CAT

I could list the obvious reasons: better job opportunities, top-tier colleges, high ROI, great peer networks. But for me, it’s deeper.

  1. Structured Growth: The CAT gives direction to my learning. Every day, I know what I need to improve on—be it logic, language, or time management.

  2. Competitive Energy: I thrive under challenges. The competitive nature of CAT prep pushes me to raise my own bar.

  3. Career Clarity: The process of preparing has helped me understand not just business concepts, but what kind of thinker I am.

  4. Long-term Goals: An MBA is not just a degree; it’s a launchpad. And the CAT is the first test that launches that journey.

What I’ve Learned So Far From CAT Preparation

I’m still in the middle of my preparation, but here are some things that preparing for the CAT has already taught me:

1. Time is Everything

When you’re juggling classes, mocks, hobbies, and your mental health, time feels like currency. The CAT makes you value every hour. It’s taught me to plan my day, stick to routines, and still leave space for revision and reflection.

2. It’s Not About Knowing Everything

The first few weeks of CAT prep were overwhelming. So many topics. So many questions. But then I realized: it’s not about mastering everything, but about picking your battles. It’s about identifying your strong and weak areas and working smart.

3. Mocks are Brutal but Honest

I feared my first CAT mock like a horror movie. The results? Not great. But honest. Every mock is like a mirror. Preparing for the CAT  taught me not to take failure personally. It’s a feedback loop.

4. Consistency Beats Motivation

Some days I wake up ready to conquer the syllabus. Some days, I don’t even want to look at a math problem. But the key is showing up anyway. The CAT is a consistency game, and I’m learning to respect that.

My Approach to CAT Preparation

I’m currently following a weekly schedule that mixes concepts, practice, and revision. I focus on:

  • Quantitative Aptitude: Solving 10–15 questions daily

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC): Reading newspapers, solving RC sets, and vocabulary practice

  • Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation (LRDI): Puzzle solving, sectional mocks

  • Full-Length Mocks: Twice a month, increasing frequency as the exam nears

Using a mix of books, online platforms, and coaching material, I’m customizing the CAT prep to suit my pace.

Challenges I’m Facing

It hasn’t been smooth. Here’s where the CAT has tested me most:

  • Self-Doubt: After a few poor mock scores, I started questioning my potential. But then I realized every serious CAT aspirant goes through this.

  • Time Crunch: Balancing college, hobbies, and personal commitments with CAT prep isn’t easy.

  • Burnout: The mental fatigue is real. Breaks, hobbies, and good sleep have become non-negotiable.

Small Wins That Keep Me Going

Amid all the chaos, the CAT gives small victories that remind me I’m on the right path:

  • Understanding a tough LRDI set after multiple tries

  • Improving my VARC score consistently

  • Managing time better with every mock

  • Becoming more aware of how I learn best

These wins might not show up on a scorecard yet, but they matter.

What’s Next in My CAT Journey

My focus now is to:

  • Increase mock frequency and improve analysis

  • Strengthen weak areas in Quant

  • Practice timed RCs daily

  • Stay mentally focused and avoid burnout

The CAT is still months away, but the prep is already reshaping how I think and plan. I’ve started enjoying the grind—because I know it’s leading somewhere meaningful.

……

Preparing for the CAT is less about cracking a test and more about discovering yourself. It pushes you to think critically, manage your time, handle pressure, and keep learning. That’s why I’m not just preparing for the CAT to get into a B-school—I’m preparing because I want to become someone who can handle the intensity of that journey, and more.

If you’re just starting your CAT journey or are stuck somewhere in the middle, remember: the test is tough, but so are you.
